Sleep Diagnostics

Sleep Diagnostics

Our sleep center is a state of the art facility directed by Dr. Terry Wimpey, Athens area's only physician to have completed a Fellowship in neurophysiology and sleep medicine at Duke University.  Our patients receive the best in comprehensive care and are treated to the upmost in comfort and privacy in our five star outfitted sleep rooms.  Complete with private baths and flat screen tv's, our patients experience the finest in hotel lodgings, while being monitored by our highly trained technicians.

Unlike most sleep centers, which are only equipped to diagnose the most prevalent sleep disorders, Dr. Wimpey's specialized training ensures not only the proper diagnosis, but expert care and treatment of each individual's particular needs.  After the initial study, our patients receive a thorough evaluation and plan for ongoing care while being allowed a variety of treatment options.

Sleep Disorder Evaluations

We treat all types of sleep disorders, including these common complaints:

  • Circadian Rhythm Disorders
  • Restless Leg Syndrome

  • Parasomnia

Sleep Study Types

Polysomnography (PSG)

  • An overnight evaluation of body function during sleep.

CPAP Titration

  • For patients experiencing sleep-disordered breathing, a trial of titration with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) may be ordered.  This overnight test allows the physician to monitor and calibrate the amount of air needed to prevent closure of airways - one cause of excessive sleep apnea.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test

  • Used to diagnose narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia, the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) assesses excessive daytime sleepiness by measuring how quickly a patient falls asleep in a quiet environment.  It is also commonly called the nap study.

Maintaining Wakefulness Test

  • This test can measure the ability to stay awake.  It is typically used for patients experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness and can asses possible response to sleep disorder treatments.
